He walked into the office and almost instinctively reached over Carrie's desk for the light switch before realizing that the lights were actually on. It was simply darker than it should have been. Looking up he noticed that one of the bulbs in the overhead fixture was out.
No. Not out. Missing completely.
He froze in mid-step, his shoeless right foot hovering dangerously only inches above a jagged piece of broken bulb. "Jesus Christ!"
A close look above showed him that the base of the bulb was still screwed into the fixture. Something had caused the glass itslef to snap off and fall, and now here it lay in three pieces on the gray, low-pile carpet. He glanced at the cat, who raised one eyelid and looked back from its perch atop the computer monitor before stretching its paws and curling its back to him.
He knelt and retrieved the three pieces from the floor, carefully holding them together to make sure that they formed a complete bulb so that there weren't any more fragments lurking about. As he deposited them in the trash bag images of a light bulb spontaneously shattering flitted through his mind.
How on Earth did that happen?
