Of the month: July '04

Well, it's that time again. The first of the month; time to roll out a new selection of things you should visit, read, hear, and see.

Link of the Month:
Flying Omelette's Kitchen

This is a fun place to go if you like old video games. Flying Omelette (or just "FO") puts up some really well-written reviews and there are funny cameos/weirdness databases. ANGRY BEEF is also a regular on the forums, so go take a visit.

Album of the Month:
NMVGPTS: this will all end badly

Finally available (though not online) is the first full-lenght album from the T-town band NMVGPTS (No MoVinG ParTS). It's good, mellow, spacey, noisy, instrumental rock—the absolute perfect background to long days spent on the 'puter. Trust me.

Book of the Month:
coverI, Robot: The Illustrated Screenplay

No, this is NOT the screenplay to the Will Smith movie coming out this summer. This is the screenplay that was written in 1977 by none other than Harlan Ellison—and is ACTUALLY BASED ON THE BOOK!!! This is perhaps the greatest movie that never got made, but it's nice to appreciate the screenplay on the page. Maybe when I'm rich...

DVD of the Month:
coverThe Rundown

This is one of the best stupid action flicks I've seen. It's just so much freakin' fun, and it knows just the right tone so that it doesn't take itself too seriously but you still get wrapped up in the characters and their interactions. The relationship between The Rock and Sean Everett Scott is dy-no-mite. My only reservation is that I think director Peter Berg sort of over-directed the film—there are too many fast cuts and fancy camera angles that sometimes get in the way of trying to watch what's actually happening. But I watched this DVD more than any other in the month of June, so that's a-okay in my book, babycakes!
