Random Disneyland Remembrances

We flew out to Disneyland on Sunday, way freakin' early in the morning. We got to the Disneyland Resort area around 9:00-ish AM. The hotel (The Grand Californian—absolutely gorgeous) didn't check people in until 3:00 PM, so we went straight to Disneyland and spent most of the whole day there. The very first thing we did was go on the Matterhorn Bobsleds, which had been revamped, althought I can't in any way remember the ones from when I was a kid so I have no idea what's different.

We went on Space Mountain, which I had never been on before, and which has a really groovy retro soundtrack that kinda matches the action of the coaster (a very good idea). Oddly enough, it is a new soundtrack that was written to sound retro. Very cool.

Almost all of the attractions that were closed last year were open this time. Everything except the Haunted Mansion, which closes the last half of every September to gear it up for October, the hauntedest month of all. I guess if we want to see that we'll have to go sometime either earlier or later than we've been going these last two years.

We wanted to go to Blue Bayou for lunches, but they were all full up. So we put down a reservation for Monday with dreams of deep-fried Monte Cristo sammitches in our heads. Instead we ate at some cafeteria-style place just a few paces away.

This trip to Disneyland was interesting in that it seemed we always ended up in New Orleans Square. It was kind of like our base of operation. It was a bit surreal seeing as how New Orleans basically doesn't exist right now in real life.

At one point while we were walking through Adventureland we heard the announcement that there was less than a five-minute wait for the Jungle Cruise. So we looked at each other and made a hard left and basically walked right onto a boat. The guides this year weren't nearly as good as they have been. They make up their own scripts and they're mostly not any good. But the first guy did have a W.C. Fields style way of speaking that was most entertaining. They actually made some changes to Jungle Cruise, the biggest one being piranhas. You'll see.

We went back to the hotel when our room was available and totally took a big ol' nap.

By the time the evening rolled around we had really covered almost the entire park. I think there were maybe a couple of rides we didn't get to hit, but for the most part we got everything. So we bought some hush puppies and settled down to watch Fantasmic (unfortunately the new fireworks show was only showing Fri-Sat, this being the off-season). Carrie had seen it years and years ago, but I never had. There are actually some rather impressive giant costume effects, and the Steamboat Willy touch was very, very good.

Two Ways to Be Back

The First:
Carrie & I are back from Disneyland, where we went for our 1-year wedding anniverserary.

The Second:
I am over the flu-like bug I got when I got home.

Yesterday I spent the vast majority of the day painting the kitchen a very dramatic orange. I'm about halfway done, and it's a completley different room in there, now. Awexome.

I'll write about Disneyland as I think of fun things to write about. But now I'm going to be on regular updating schedule once again.

Top of the Wedding Cake

Yesterday (Friday) I had a tonne of work to do to get the Bead Factory Workshops up and running. Well, not running, but up. They'll be running next week.

When I picked up Carrie for lunch she had a suprise. Lemme ecksplain. You know how when you get married you're supposed to save the very top of your cake so you can eat it on your one-year anniversary? Yeah, we didn't do that. We ate it the next day. Man, it was freakin' good. So Viki had the top of our cake re-made and yesterday she gave it to Carrie.

I went to the bank and deposited $51.00 worth of change we'd accumulated. It weighed a lot.

After work we went up to Federal Way to my folks' house to celebrate Susan's birthday (we're gonna be outta town on her acktyoowal birthday). Mike gave her pyjamas with a cat that looked a lot like Ace on them. We gave her some picture frames and earrings. We met her boyfriend Jason and his daughter Alexis (not as cute as our Lena). Then after presents and Strawboy Shortcake everybody drove back down to Tacoma for din-dins at Harbor Lights. The place is really old-fashioned; I bet their menu hasn't changed in 20 years. Tons of fried stuff, coleslaw, all that kind of thing. Not a modern contrivance on the menu anywhere. It was okay, but a little pricey for the quality (though quantitiy is high). Alexis y I played with tiny pink dinosaurs and crackers. After a large cracker got broken into several pieces Carrie said, "See, this is why we're not having children."

When we got back home I had to finish up the BF stuff. Took an hour. Then it was a few tracks of Mario Kart and orf to behd.

Speaking of Getting Together More Often

Yesterday (Thursday) Carrie y I took Carrie's Grandma K out for breakfast at IHOP. We had coupons. I had an huge meal that came with cinnamon buns that they French-toasted. After that we took her to Fred Meyer's so she could get supplied up. I bought also some sammitch baggies and a red onion.

Around 5:00 Carrie & I went over to Heather & Chris's for din-dins. Heather, who is quite a good chef (or "cheffrey" as I like to call those people) made a really tasty pesto sauce. Lotsa garlic and der cheese. Con queso! Also there was Cat & Chris.

After dinner Carrie drove me, Heather, and Chris up to Seattle to see Steph dance in a dance thing at ArtsWest. Good ol' ArtsWest. I almost walked downstairs just by habit.

There were four dances. The second was my favorite. The guy in it was very good. The third one was pretty good once they actually started moving, but there was like 75 minutes (exaggeration) of them just lying on the ground and bonking their knuckles on the floor. Bo-ring! The fourth one was called "The Onion Twins." Cat threatened that she would shout out, "Where are the damned onions!?" during the dance if no one came out in a giant onion costume. Carrie laughed so hard she slapped Cat in her injured knee. My main problem with it was the music was giving out very specific emotional cues, but the dancing was giving out completely different tone/emotion/pacing cues. Didn't know what the hell it was supposed to make me feel. Like there would be a very quiet and kinda sad piece of music and the dancers would be vibrating and throwing themselves all over with mad freneticism (word?). Huh? Did they choreograph it without listening to the music? Seemed like it to me, my fliend.

Steph was in the first dance, which had a similar flow to a zombie movie. No, not really a zombie movie so much as a disease-outbreak movie. The musician was live onstage with his guitar, and my favorite parts were when he would purposefully play something out of tune and act all flustered about it. Very funny. I like gags like that in things.

Anyhoo, on the drive back Chris got a craving for Iced Cream so we tried to find a Cold Stone Creamery that was open between West Seattle and Tacoma, but to no avail. They all closed at different times, though, was the weird thing.

Hooray for hanging out in groups!

So You Think You Can Make Enchiladas and Brownies

Yesterday (Wednesday) in the evening Carrie & I went over to Steph's for dinner. Also there were Christine, Dylan, Cat, Chris, Chris, and of course Katie. The purpose of such a gathering was to watch an episode of the smash hit "So You Think You Can Dance" televised program. It was kinda fun to watch such a show with people who are actually dancers and can correctly critique the dances, plus Carrie & Cat, whose idol is SarCastro.

Steph made enchiladas for din-dins. Cat made a seven-layer dip that I couldn't eat. Carrie made hot brownies with cold iced cream for dessert.

I like getting a bunch of BF people together like that. It shouldst happen more of the often.

Open the Gateway

Yesterday (Tuesday) Carrie & I met Sandy & Mathias at Gateway & to India for din-dins. I hadn't been there since before I got sick, and I really haven't been there very often since it expanded; usually just meeting Brandy or some other BF girl there for lunch.

Carrie had to leave dinner early to go teach her class. As the three remaining were about to leave Eric Manley and Gina came in to eat. Hadn't seen them in quite a while. Also, when we left I didn't even think that Carrie had taken the car, so I had to have Sandy swing back around and pick me up.

We came back to my house where we played some cooperative Mario Kart, with them driving and me gunning. Then we watched Food Network. Alton Brown did a whole half-hour on making crepes, and now Mathias and I are all gung-ho about making them, especially the kind with the onion-mushroom spread.

Before they left I had them go through my things to see what I was borrowing from them.

Nicole dropped by a class handout for me shortly thereafter. And shortly thereafter that Carrie came home and we played some more Mario Kart before bed.

Everything Comes Out in the Wash

Yesterday was basically a wash. I didn't get anything done. I was cranky and grumpy all morning long. So basically all I ended up doing was watching Firefly and taking a big ol' nap in the afternoon. Carrie went and bought food in the evening and we made some open-faced sammitches with fresh mozzarella and fresh basil (and mine had turkey on it). There was some Mario Kart at one point. But basically the day was a wash.

Triumphant Return

Saturday during the day I did as many dishes as I possibly could in preparation for Carrie's return. I also made the bed and generally straightened up before I drove down to Olympia for

My Triumphant Return.

I was 18 minutes late to the theater due to two lanes of I-5 being blocked off presumably because of an accident (there was a fire truck and a tow truck).

Anyhoo, the show happened, and I hosted and was in every single scene, usually as the main character. I found the playlist of the night in my pocket, and present it now to you:
  • Jerry the Spy
  • The Odd Cuppo
  • Escaped Liberace
  • Monsier Dandon
  • Jerry the Spy: Part 2
  • Daredevil/Terrorist
  • Cave Bros.
  • G'nar the Duck
  • Professor Horace & Cecil present Science Made Amusing
  • Sasparilla, USA
  • Jerry the Spy: Part 3
  • Rags and his 20s & 30s Style Tin-Pan Alley Band, sponsored by Peanut Co. brand Peanuts

Afterwards we went to Red Robin and Sandy bought me half a burger. And when I say "we" went to Red Robin, I mean almost the entire audience came with us. Seriously.

Then as I was driving home Carrie called and said she was out dancing with Katie and would probably get home around same time I did. She actually ended up getting home sooner, though.

Can't Wake Up Without Her

Yesterday (Friday) I had lunch with Christine and also Melissa & Travis at Rock Pasta. We all had the lunch buffet thing. The lasagna was pretty bad, but the pizza was good as always. I hadn't really eaten breakfast on account of having gotten up so late (it was almost 10:00.

You know how crappy love stories often include lines of dialogue to the effect of, "I can't sleep without her." Well, in my case it seems to be that I can't wake up without her. I've been way oversleeping. I don't seem to notice alarms going off—I turn them off without waking up.

Anyhoo, in the afternoon I talked with Brandy on the phone. She was at a big Film Studies party and was having a great time in NYC. I also talked to Sandy, who said they might be in town on Tuesday to go to Gateway. I also talked with Carrie, who was having fun with various cats at the various places she was staying.

Geoffs came over shortly after 7:00 and we watched the "Jaynestown" episode of Firefly on Sci-Fi, and then later in the evening we went and saw The Brothers Grimm at the big Lakewood theater. Perhaps I'll write a review of it? Taisha called both me and Geoff during the movie. I wonder what she wanted?

Approach by Sea

Yesterday (Thursday) morning I went over to Linnea's to give her the glasses I had etched. But wouldn't you know it? Both she and Lena were sick as dogs. I felt really badly for them.

Sometime in the middle of the day I went over to the BF so I could pick up the new class schedule and hang out with the girls in the back for a bit. Christine invited me to lunch today.

In the evening, after I cooked myself some spaghetti and almost took a nap because of food coma, wouldn't you know it? I painted another pretty picture. I call this one "Approach by Sea"

I likes it. I talked to Carrie a couple of times via the phone. She's the only person who will actually call me back right now; all of my other friends are flaking on returning my calls. Kinda miffs me a little bit.

My Fury is Blind

Yesterday (Wednesday) morning I took Carrie to Mark & Viki's so she and Viki could fly to California for a few days. BOO! I stopped by the BF to drop off the finished Fashion Show Handouts on the way home. Well, actually I forgot and started pulling up to the house before I remembered.

I did a metric tonne of dishes and straightened up the living room quite a bit. In the afternoon I took a walk because it was a nice, pleasant day. But about ten minutes into the walk the tempurature shot up about twelve degrees and I got really hot. I had to stop at the BF again to get some water.

I swung by Fred Meyer's and bought some cheese and a salmon steak, and I made salmon with lemon sauce for dinner. It was pretty good, but I put too much lemon into the lemon sauce (you wouldn't think that possible, would you?), so it was really strong. Next time I'll just use half as much, so half of a half of a lemon.

Sometime around dinner I was looking through channels and I happened to catch the last half hour of the 1989 Rutger Hauer masterpiece Blind Fury. Why would I ever watch any part of that movie? Because it has the single best dialogue sequence in the history of history, as follows:

Lyle Pike
Shit!

Tector Pike
Fuck!

Lyle & Tector Pike
Shit-fuck!

Now how can you possibly beat dialogue like that?

In the evening I etched a couple of glasses as a present for Linnea. One had a purdy flower and one had an exciting rocket on it.

No One Tripped This Time

Yesterday (Tuesday) Carrie didn't have class, so she worked the full day. She did, however, still have that twisted ankle (from Monday), so I drove her around for the first part of the day. After work we played Mario KartThen she went to Starbucks to meet with one of Mary's friends whom she'd met at the wedding stuff. Perhaps this girl will be a new BF employee. Time will tell. And then I made spaghetti.

After dinner Carrie went to Heather's again. See, Carrie had been told that a bunch of the girls were getting together there for a "happy hour" type of thing.

"I'm not invited?" I asked.

"No, it's just the girls," Carrie said. "No boyfriends."

When Carrie got there, there were three or four boyfriends there. So she called me up and I walked all the way over there very quickly. I didn't trip on that bad part of sidewalk. It was fun, but it is way hot in their place so I kept on having to stand outside. Luckily most of the action was in the kitchen, which is just inside thh door. I had amareto sour.

Pretty River

I painted a new painting! Yesterday, it being Labor Day, I didn't work. Instead I painted, something I hadn't really done since before sicky happened.

But let me back up... to the beginning of the day. Okay? Otay.

I drove Carrie to the BF because we had to take in all the samples for the Fashion Show. It would be too cumbersome to walk. Why did I take her to work on a day when you're not supposed to work? Because every labor day at the Bead Factory is what is referred to as "Staff Day." Basically, Viki gives everyone gift cards for Nordstrom's and rents a limo and they all go up to Seattle and go apes--t.

A few mintues after I dropped off Carrie my phone rang. Carrie asked if I could dig out the CD that I'd made for Lena on Sunday. You see, when it comes to music, Lena, like all 3-year-olds I assume, likes nothing more than Gwen Stefani and The Black-Eyed Peas. So I'd made a CD that was nothing but those two intermingled with each other. About an hour long. Carrie had apparently mentioned it and all the girls wanted to listen to it in the limo. So I went and got it out of the car and stood in front of the house. Soon a limo (a Hummer limo—boo!!!!) pulled up. The back window unrolled and I stuck my head in to a thunderous cheer. They had already cracked the booze. I passed in the CD and said, "Now I expect every single one of you to buy me something." Of course no one did.

I luxuriated most of the day, and decided early on that I would paint. I wanted to watch something that was mindless good fun while I painted, so I dug out The Rundown, but the DVD wasn't in the case! That really pisses me off (I still haven't found it). So instead I put on Big Trouble in Little China, which has basically the same effect as The Rundown, but with even more comedy.

Carrie came home kinda exhausted, but with new Rocket Dog Mary Janes. But not too exhausted to play some Mario Kart! We couldn't play a full game, though, because she got really, really sleepy. As she napped, I went to Trader Joe's for food, since we basically had none whatsoever in the hizzouse. After I came home and put the groceries away we put some fish in the oven to cook-up while we played more Mario Kart. We would play a track, then eat some fish. Play, eat. Carrie made some really good lemon-garlic dipping sauce for the fish, too!

After dinner we walked to Chris & Heather's place. Well, we almost walked the whole way; Carrie had to limp about half a block because there's a big upheaval in the sidewalk on Heather's block, and Carrie took a big ol' tumble and twisted up her ankle something fierce. I had to help her up a ton of stairs (they live upsteairs in a house—a house you have to walk up a ton of stairs to get to in the first place). Cat O'Reilly was already there, and Missa & Travis showed up shortly thereafter. Carrie put a frozen bag of peas on her ankle and Heather served us all some desserts she'd made.
  1. Ice cream with homemade truffle sauce
  2. Chocolate tart with walnuts

I could only eat the first one on account of I didn't want to have to sit there and chew for the next hour in order to safely grind up the walnuts. Nuts still equal bad for me.

At the end of the evening Travis helped Carrie hobble down all the stairs and I helped Cat, who drove us home so we wouldn't have to hobble all the way back. Cat also gave Carrie some gauze to wrap her ankle.

Too Much for One Boy?

Yesterday (Sunday) practice was not going to be able to be held here at my house 'cause Carrie was watching Lena and needed the house to do that. However, practice ended up not being able to happen until 5:00 in the evening, so I got to actually help watch Lena during the day. Since there were now two adults, we took her to the zoo (again), using a two-for-one pass that we had. She was rather well-behaved.

Practice was at the ancestral Gibbs household in Puyallup. We went over a lot of Rags & His 20s & 30s Tin-Pan Alley Style Band. Go to the Yacht Club on Fools Play Island to learn about them!

At the end of practice I sang a recorded song about being locked in a shed. Look for that in one of the coins soon, as well. Probably the purple coin.

I'm really freakin' tired now, what with going to the zoo and practice.

Marry Mary

Yesterday (Saturday) was not only the day that Fools Play Island went live. You wouldn't think that anything more important than that could happen in one day, right? Wrong-o, my fine feathererered fliend.

Saturday was the day that Mary McEwan got married.

Carrie was her Maid of Hono(u)r. The ceremony was at 6:00 at the chapel-type of place at University of Puget Sound. She married a guy who up until a couple months ago I knew as Jimbo. Turns out his real name is Caplan. Who knew? Not me.

His family is huge. And crazy. I know what it's like to marry into a big family (my family, by which I mean the relatives I actually know, consists of six people including myself), but I got off easy let me tell you. This group is nutz.

Anyhoo, the wedding was just kinda the ending of the day. Earlier on, Carrie went out to buy supplies for the "Bridal Emergency Kit" that you should have if you're getting married. She brought home healthy fast-food breakfast from Jack in the Box. I got to eat her ham. Then she went and got Mary and the two of them went to the fancy Foxfire Salon, where they both got their hair done, Carrie got a pedicure, and Mary got a manicure. Then Carrie eventually came back home in the ofternoon. I took her back to the chapel place around 4:00 so she could bring supplies and such, then came back home for just like an hour or so. Then it was back to the churchy place for the actual wedding.

I sat actually with Carrie's folks (marrying into a big family). The wedding was nice and simple. I could have done without the pastor doing his little talk schtick that Carrie & I were fortunate to avoid—our minister lady didn't really insert any words of her own into the ceremony. She certainly didn't give a little monologue like this guy did. Fortunately I've heard much worse.

There was good music during the ceremony, and Mary's brother sang (tenor) a song. He's a good singer, but was a bit drowned out by the gigantic organ on the back wall. The song was also kinda repetitive.

But Mary was extraordinarily beautiful, as always. Except more so.

The reception was kind of a clusterf--k. I booked out of the churchy place immediately after the wedding and careened to the reception, which was at a the South Park Community Center on South Tacoma Way. I got there so fast so I could get behind the drink-pouring area and pour drinks for the other guests as they arrived and wanted hooch (a job which, by the way I was volunteered for earlier that afternoon). After the hall filled and the wedding part was done with photos, Carrie came and dragged me away from that job. When Mary arrived, they setup the receiving line, which if you brought your plate with you, you could immediately walk to the buffet after shaking their hands.

After eating (yummy salmon) there was the first dance (which I almost missed due to bathrooming), then general dancing for quite a bit. Then that stopped, and the toasts were given by best man Don, who rambled on for many, many minutes (but did include a reference to Tremors), and then maid of honor Carrie, who said about three sentences and tried not to cry (cute). The cake was cut, and the dancing was re-started while servers served pieces of a different cake, I swear. Then a while later dancing was stopped again so they could show a slide show of childhood pictures of Mary and Jimbo Caplan. Then the dancing was re-started again, but only for a little bit before the last dance was called. I only got to dance with Mary for maybe half a song, which sucked, but was better than nothing. Then Mary and Jimbo left while the remaining guests lined the way to the convertible and threw rice at them. Well, I threw mine at Carrie, not them.

After that there were some goodbyes between us and the ohter bridesmaids (Erin and Melissa) and non-bridesmaid Shane (sp? she's a Peace Corps girl). Then we came home. It was only 11:00 at night. I went and got cheese quesadillas and soft tacos that we ate in bed before going to bed.

Mary is married now.

Close to Close!

Good lawd! Doing the BF's Fashion Show handouts is car-razy! Yesterday I was up until midnight working on them. That's okay, though, 'cause Carrie wasn't even home at that time. She was out with the girls at Mary's Bachelorette Party. I think she got home sometime around 2:30, but I'm not sure; I barely woke up for her entrance.

Anyhoo, I'm very, very close to being done with all the handouts. Well, I'm more close to close than actually close.

Here's something worthwhile you should prolly check out:

September 2005:

Link of the Month:
Fools Play Island
It's finally, finally, finally done! After some TWO YEARS of revisioning, the best freakin' website ever created will be back and better than ever on SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 3RD!! Can you discover all the secrets of Fools Play Island? No friggin' way!

DVD of the Month:
Sin City
Quite possibly the best movie of the year so far? Robert Rodriguez manages to sustain what is essentially a one-note story for three full hours and make it fascinating and horrifying. Gritty and brilliant, with superb performances all around, this is the most faithful comic-book-to-movie adaptation ever. But the thing is, I didn't really like the comics, but I love this movie.

Album of the Month:
Xoc: SMW
A fascinating project: one man re-created the entire soundtrack to Super Mario World (SNES) using real instruments. Normally video game cover albums aren't very good—they're all about converting the songs to a new genre or making them sound like your band—but this one has to be listened to.
