Even More Snow

Winterfest was actually a lot of fun, and it went pretty well for me. Carrie had done better, but I hadn't. Well, I hadn't ever done Winterfest before, so that might have had something to do with it.

The snow actually went away by noon on Sunday. But Monday night it came back... with a vengeance!

The view out my back door this morning

In the evening Carrie & I took our annual "1st Snow Walk" around the neighborhood. We walked over to the Tarbets (where everybody was asleep even though it was only 9:00), then to Christine's, where we found her outside taking photos of her house in the snow. It was the first snow since she bought that house, so she was very excited!

They invited us in for Lawrence's pecan pie, which was quite excellent, and then walked us back to our house. We walked past the house that Leanna is trying to buy. I swear, pretty soon the Bead Babes are going to own this whole entire section of Tacoma.

But other than that you would not believe the day I had yesterday (Monday). I'll tell you about it later... once I actually am able to process it. Big, big, big, crazy news...

1st Snow 2006

It snowed last night ('tis still very early, which is why this photo is still dark). This would be good news, if it weren't right smack in the middle of Winterfest. Might be a slow sunday!

'Cause Sometimes Even Robots Get Thirsty

Holy Crap! It actually happened! I actually, officially launched my newest website:

Thirsty Robots

It's a really, really cool website where you can actually buy stuff that I make myself! Right now it has a whole bunch of glass etching designs and some art prints. I'm going to be adding stuff all the time! I'm very excited!

Also, I will be at Winterfest this weekend, schilling my stuff at a booth right next to my lovely wife, who will be selling her jewelry. It's a Peninsula High School in Gig Harbor (actually, I think it might technically be Purdy, but I'm not too sure). You should all definitely drop by!

Thanksgivinretrospect

Yesterday was (obviously) Thanksgiving, and it was the largest Thanksgiving evar at my family's house. There was:
  1. Me
  2. Carrie
  3. Mom
  4. Dad
  5. Grandma
  6. Carrie's Mom
  7. Carrie's Dad
  8. Carrie's Grandma
  9. Mike
  10. Susan
  11. Jason
  12. Alexis

That's quite a lot, considering growing up our Thanksgiving consisted of six people. But it was a lots of funs.

Happy Turkey Day 2006

I'm watching the Macy's Parade! Melissa, Jen, Sarah, and Lawrence were just over here having breakfast (and mimosas & bloody Marys), but they just left to go decorate the Bead Factory for the holidays.

Hope everyone is having a good Thanksgiving!

Oh... My... GAWD!

You will not believe what's been happening to me this last week-and-a-half. Seriously. It's insane. I'm <sarcasm>just a little</sarcasm> stressed out. Here are just some of the categories:
  • Water Woes
  • Clumsy Gene
  • This House is a Home... or Else!
  • iPod Wash

I might have huge, huge news to report next week. HUGE news.

"I Can't Stop Being Mean. I'm a Meany. Colm Meany"

So about the only interesting thing that happened yesterday (Thursday) was that in the evening, after I took Carrie back to the store to teach her class, I watched the much vaunted Layer Cake. It was pretty good. I'm a big Colm Meany fan (especially with his involvement in the "Take on the Toughies" project), so it was nice to see him in a big role like that.

I etched some high-heeled shoes on some martini glasses, and a couple of four-leaf clovers on some pint glasses so people can drink their Guinness in style.

Paper House

Yesterday (Wednesday) was much more eventful than the first half of the week. First of all, Carrie had the day off, so she slept in until 10:00 or so. She spent the rest of the morning and much of the apréz-midi working on jewelry.

I, in the meantime, ground some coffee and got a pot started for Carrie, and continued working on the Bead Factory's How-To Book.

In the later afternoon Carrie went out on errands, including the gym and the post office. When she came back she started making a pot of pasta sauce, a yummy red sauce with sausage and black olives. Is good. I like. I called Laura to see if it would be okay for me to pick her up at 6:00 for dinner. She said that she was a Shakabra studying, so I could pick her up there.

About eight minutes 'til 6:00 she calls me again and says that Shakabra is shutting down and kicking her out. What the f--k kind of coffee shop closes at 6:00!? That's pretty durned stoopid.

So I agree to meet her halfway to the house and jump in my car and start driving towards Shakabra. What I failed to take into consideration (and what she failed to tell me) is that she walks insanely quickly. Insanely. So quickly that I passed her before I even bothered to start looking for her. She saw me pass and called me, and we had a good laugh about it. I turned around and by the time I got back to her she was only two blocks away from the house. But it was drizzling so I drove her those two blocks anyway.

Besides the spaghetti, Carrie also made some garlic bread to go with the meal, and cracked open some red wine. While we were eating I complained to Laura, "It's too bad there aren't any carbs in this meal!"

After dinner we watched part of an episode of Mythbusters while fighting the "itis." Then I started designing my next etching design and Carrie started working on more jewelry stuffs. We told Laura she was more than welcome to stay and continue studying as she had been doing at Shakabra, so she set up her monstrously gigantic laptop on the dining room table (the thing is so wide it has a separate number pad just like a regular keyboard) and went about writing a paper.

At 9:00 I was exiled into the bedroom to watch a new episode of Mythbusters, but then at 10:00 I got my revenge by exiling Carrie into the bedroom to watch two new episodes of Laguna Beach (there wasn't enough light in the bedroom for me to properly etch). Here is the design I etched:

I got confirmation from both Carrie and Laura that it was a cute shoe design that was actually appealing to women (I'm sometimes a bit fuzzy on appealing shoe designs for women). I etched four pint glasses with it.

After Laura got to the fourth page of her paper, Carrie took her home (it was around midnight), and after she got back we put on some バトマン and went to bed.

Uneventful Events

So far this week has been terrifically uneventful. I have a lot of Bead Factory work to get done, and I continue to etch like a madman in preparation for Winterfest.

The rain finally slowed down to a trickle. These last couple of days have been the most ferocious rain since last December, when it rained basically every day for the entire month. This time it rained about a month's worth of rain in about three days. Comme-ci, comme-ca.

Last night I did get to watch the new episode of Veronica Mars, and I was pleasantly surprised that not only was Wallace actually in the episode, but he and Veronica actually interacted a couple of times!

That's my major complaint with this season so far. There has not been a single episode that has the entire main cast in it. This week we were missing Weevil and Mac (again—I miss Mac). Plus, when was the last time Wallace helped Veronica out on a case? That said, it was still a packed episode, with four entire plot-lines running through it—V's plagarism; Wallace's engineering class; Piz's bowling fiasco; Keith's cavorting.

Anyway, I'll get back to you when something more eventful happens.

Contrasts

So yesterday (Sunday) was a rather un-eventful day for me. Carrie, on the other hand... I took her to work at 7:00 in the morning, then picked her up for lunch around 2:00, and then I didn't see her again until almost 10:00 at night. She taught two classes and then there was a store meeting, and then the Bead Factory celebrated her birthday (she's the only November birthday right now).

I, in the meanwhile, put on an enormous Mythbusters marathon and etched all the glasses I didn't get to on Saturday, plus a couple more.

AT 6:30 I drove down to the store to take the annual staff photograph. It seemed that this one was going to be very different than last year's photograph. There are a lot of new people, and a lot of gone (but not forgotten) people.

That was really just about it.

Carrie brought some birthday cake home with her, and I ate half of it.

Five-Hour Drive

Yesterday (Saturday) Carrie & I got up same time as a usual week-day, because we were going up to the Lareau homestead to babysit those meddling kids and their dog. We were gonna be there for several hours, so we each packed up a lot of projects: Carrie with a huge box full of smaller boxes full of beads, and me with six pint glasses and the means with which to etch them.

We stopped off at the BF on the way up so that Carrie could get some supply or other that she needed, then continued on up. On the way there we got a call from Laura, who asked us if we were using our car, 'cause she needed to get home to Shelton.

So after I dropped Carrie off at the Lareau house shortly before 10:00, I turned right around and went and picked Laura up from her house and took her all the way down to her folks' house in Shelton. Then I turned around and headed back up north. I stopped in Olympia to get gas, and since I was only a couple of blocks away from Studio 321 I stopped in there as well to turn on the heaters and use the bathroom.

Then I continued on up north. This whole time it was raining, raining, raining. And raining. By the time I got back to the Lareaus' it was around 1:00. I'd been in the car basically straight since about 9:00 that morning. That's quite a long time! But I was glad to be able to help Laura when she needed it, so I'm totally not complaining.

I didn't, though, have time to etch any of my glasses, but I did a lot of prep-work on them, so it should go quickly today. We watched some Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire while we were there. Then we packed all the kids and the dog into the car and headed down to T-town so we could hand them off to Melissa and Travis.

That's when it started raining. Sure, it was raining when I was driving around before, but now it wasn't just raining; it was raining. At one point when we were driving down the freeway, Julian happened to look out the front window and asked, "Uh, how can you see where you're going?"

To which Carrie replied, "Not very easily!" It wasn't so much rain as it was a solid volume of water continually falling from the sky.

We got everyone safely down to the ballet school and handed off the Lareau clan to Melissa, then we went back to our own house. Some of the roads on the way were more river than road; it was raining so much in so little time that the storm drains couldn't handle the load and it was washing all over the street. It was nutz with a Z.

By the time we got home I was pretty exhausted from spending so much time in the car, so I just vegged out in front of the TV (Goldeneye was on) for about 45-60 minutes before I took a shower and got ready for Fools Play.

Carrie made me a delicious roast beef sammitch for din-dins, and then I was all packed up and ready to go by 5:15. It normally only takes me 30-35 minutes to get down there, but I'm glad I left when I did. It wasn't raining in Tacoma anymore by the time I left, but there are always a couple of patches between T-Town and Oly where, if it is going to rain at all, it will rain there. And it rained in those patches yesterday. So even though I left 15 minutes earlier than usual, I made it to Studio 321 right on time.

Having turned the heaters on earlier in the day had helped the building to warm up more quickly than usual. Mike added some space heaters to the mix when he got there, but we made the mistake of forgetting to turn off the space heaters when the show started, so by the end of the night it was roasting in there. We just can't win!

We did win with a very funny show, though. Some of the biggest laughs came from a scene where I played a bumbling scientist who was trying to remove some dino DNA from a piece of amber. Why so funny? Because one of our regular audience member friends happens to be named Amber. By never prefacing the word "amber" with an article, it made it seem like we were talking about reaching into Amber herself to extract the DNA. And also because I was fracking hilarious during the scene anyway.

It was a good night, and felt different than the other shows we've been doing recently. Afterwards we all went out to the Rib Eye as usual (although it took much, much longer for people to leave for the restaurant and usual; everybody was just standing around in the theater for a long time). The only thing of note was that at one point Amber and Tiare disappeared into the ladies' room with a digital camera and came back with some absolutely hilarious "sexy" photos that were not in the least bit sexy. Ask Sandy or Mathias if you want to see them.

Then I took a box of tots back to my wife. It didn't rain on the way back home... except for in those two patches where it always rains. But it only rained in those patches this time. It didn't rain.

In all total I spent five hours of the day driving around. Quite a lot! But, again, because it was to help a friend in need, I don't feel the least bit put-out by it. Glad to help.

Remains of the Day

So yesterday (Friday) was a bit of a bummer of a day. Let's see:

Carrie had the day off, which was awexome, 'cause she nevar gets teh Fridays off. In the morning she went with Linnea to watch Lena's gymnastics class at the Y. I went to the Y myself around the time that class ended and ran into Carrie as she was getting finished with her post-gymnastics-class workout. Then I worked out myself. My knees are starting to feel a bit better, so on Monday I'll start with the actual cardio-style workouts, but yesterday I just did weights, which don't require any knee usage.

After a lunch of potstickers we went to Paper Zone to buy (what else) paper. Card stock, to be specific, on which we planned to print out postcard announcements for the upcoming Winterfest show at which both Carrie & I will have booths. Then we hit Office Depot to buy some sticker labels and a receipt book for me, just in case anybody wants to actually buy anything at my booth.

We came home and I started printing out the postcards while Carrie manned the paper cutter and cut them out. Then the plan was to print out a little "bring this postcard and get 20% off" onto the labels, and affix them to the back of each postcard. It was then that I realized (quite proudly) that the postcards, being 4" x 6", could be printed on exactly as if they were photos. We didn't have to use labels—we could print directly onto the backs of the postcards!

So I put the un-opened package of labels back in the Office Depot bag to return to the store at a later date, and commenced the printing-off of the backs of the postcards.

This is when the fun ended, because when I was almost completely done with this task, Carrie realized that we had the wrong dates for the show on the postcard—on both the front and the back. We were both very upset and extremely mystified as to how such a blatant error could have gotten past the proofing stage, but the end result was that I had to print out all 102 postcards again.

Two-plus hours of work completely down the drain, not to mention all the printer ink (one of the most valuable substances on Earth by weight).

While I commenced the re-printing, Carrie went over to Lisa's to make some jewelry. Originally she was gonna go over there to address and stamp the postcards, but that obviously wasn't gonna be happening.

Anyway, I printed out all the postcards and started cutting them out myself, but I only managed to cut out about 40 of them before I just felt so sick of the whole thing that I stopped. While cutting, I found and watched this fascinating 1971 lesbian vampire exploitation movie, Vampyros Lesbos
that was quite a kick to watch. It had a very bizarre musical score (which, I just learned, was partly used in Q.T.'s Jackie Brown)

Carrie came back, we ate some lasagna for dinner, and then I etched and watched TV for the rest of the evening (Battlestar Galactic and Numb3rs). I etched some more Playing Card Suits and a couple of snowmen:

Oh, and just in case anybody is actually interested, these are the correct dates:

Just Keep Your Power Gloves Off Her

It has been very, very cold all week. Overnight temperatures in the 20s and all that. And, like an old man, my joints have been seizing up. Especially my knees. Oh, so sore! It hurts! My back ain't been doin' so hot, neither. So I've taken the week off from strenuous exercising.

Yesterday (Wednesday) I had quite a lot of work to do, and I'm proud to say I got it all done. It started when I was called to print out some Bead Factory earring kit inserts. When I was about 80% done with that my printer decided to run out of cyan and yellow inks. So after a trip to Office Depot and $25 later, I had more ink and completed my print-out duties.

I dropped them off at the store and picked Carrie up for lunch (leftover Reuben sammitches). She took the car back to work, and I spent the entire afternoon finishing up the handouts for the evening's classes.

Carrie was feeling exhausted from over-work, so she napped when she finally got home. I posted my most recent article to MySpace so that some o' y'all might actually read it. We scrounged for din-dins, which meant that I ate a couple of Hot Pockets®.

I caught the last hour of Fred Savage's The Wizard after dinner, then worked on etching some glasses. I made two pairs, the "Playing Card Suits" and the "Lotus" designs:

I also caught a new episode of Mythbusters, which was an excellent one where they blew up many disposable lighters, and did a whole bunch of Old West shooting tricks.

Carrie went to bed before I did, but ended up not being able to fall asleep until I got there and started playing Animal Crossing. Swear to god, she falls asleep easier if I'm playing video games.

Reuben Tradition

Yesterday (Tuesday) was, of course, Halloween!

It was a very busy day for me. Apart from doing all the work that I had to do, I also went to the Fred Meyer for to go to the bonk, as well as to buy some more corned beef, rye bread, and some cherry tomatoes.

Linnea stopped by in the afternoon and offered me some outdoor Halloween-style lights, which I happily accepted and immediately put up. I also prepped my pumpkins (Which means I sprinkled some cinnamon on the insides of their lids so they'd smell nice when they were lit up) and baked a batch of pumpkin/chocolate chip cookies.

I was so busy that I didn't have time to shower until around 4:00 in the afternoon.

Around 5:00 I lit a whole bunch of candles (including ones that I put in my punkins). Our first trick-or-treater was actually Lawrence, dressed up like Sparrowhawk from them Ursula K. LeGuin stories. A while after he left Laura came over. And then a while later the whole Tarbet clan showed up while trick-or-treating, and came inside to warm themselves by the roaring fire we had going. It was a really cold evening! Then Carrie's folks and Grandma showed up while the Tarbets were still there, and Carrie's mum went absolutely ga-ga over Baby Eva.

A while after the Tarbets left I started my assembly-line process of making Reuben Sammitches, my now-annual Halloween tradition. I made probably 14 total? Yeah, something like that. We all (the whole Hamm clan, me, and Laura) ate them for din-dins along with Carrie's Russian green bean, potato, and sauerkraut soup (having sauerkraut in both the sammitches and the soup ties the whole meal together).

I took Laura back to her house around 8:00, then when I came back played "Fascination" with the remaining people. That game takes freakin' forever. We put on the new episode of Veronica Mars in the background, so I'm not exactly clear on everything that happened, especially with the Wallace sub-plot.

Everyone left around 10:00, and then Carrie and I were so tired that we turned off all the Halloween stuff, straightened up just a little bit, and went straight to bed. It didn't seem like we got quite as many trick-or-treaters this year as we did last year. I think we got somewhere between 50 and 75 this year, but that's probably a generous estimate.

These next few days are going to be insanely busy ones for me; I have a half-dozen class handouts to make, and I need to start cranking out more and more etched glasses. But for sanity's sake I'll try to stay social. Via phone if not in person.

Oh, and I wrote an article about the construction of my latest Halloween costume. You should check it out by clicking on the title below:

The Ocean Shores Pirate's Best Costume Idea Ever

"Of the Month" November '06

Link of the Month:
This Might Be a Wiki
If you want to know ALL about They Might Be Giants (my favorite band), then this frighteningly exhaustive website is the place for you.

DVD of the Month:
Nacho Libre
I just can't get over how funny this movie is. I likes it a whole bunches. It feels like a cross between Napoleon Dynamite and a Wes Anderson movie, starring Jack Black. Fascinating.

Game of the Month:
Toribash
A fascinating fighting game that has no pre-set movesets. You fight by manipulating the joints on your ragdoll-style character. Includes options for "dismemberement," wherein if you strike an opponents body part with enough force, it'll come right off! The possibilities are practically endless—I once cut my opponent completely in half... with my crotch.
